We want everyone to be able to order school lunches easily - on a phone, with a screen reader, with the keyboard only, or with the text made larger. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.
What we do
- Text is set in Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed for readers with low vision.
- Colours are checked for contrast; each caterer's own colours get dark or light text automatically.
- Light, dark and high-contrast modes, following your device or chosen at the bottom of every page.
- Everything works with the keyboard, with a visible focus outline and a "Skip to content" link.
- Animations stop when your device asks for reduced motion.
- Pages are checked with automated accessibility tests (axe) and by hand with the keyboard.
- The code sheets schools hand out are tagged PDFs (PDF/UA-1): screen readers get the headings, the steps and a description of the QR code, in English and Irish.
- English and Irish.
Known gaps
- The Irish wording is still being checked by a native speaker.
- Dish photos are uploaded by caterers; the dish name is always shown next to the photo.
- In the kitchen's back office, two table controls (an unlabelled column above the row buttons, and the filter button's label) don't fully meet the guidelines yet.
